Finance Summer Analyst Program- Class of 07

I met one of my best friends while standing in line at my internship orientation. A fellow black girl and omo Naija, it was an instant connection. Later that day we connected with another intern from Georgetown University. The three of us were inseparable throughout the summer. After work, we would stick together at intern activities or wander around New York City. Occasionally we would get into some misadventures like sneaking out of work to attend a summer concert or one crazy experience we had in Times Square. When I almost lost my mind over my then-boyfriend who suddenly ghosted me, Funto showed up at my desk with tissues and encouragement. I almost lost my focus but they forced me to get my act together.

After the program wrapped up, Funto and I stayed in touch and eventually became roommates. The years we lived together were truly some of the best times. When I got married she was one of my bridesmaids and when I had my daughter she became a godmother. Shortly after my daughter was born, she moved across the country and started her family but we remained very close.

Shewit went on to finish her program at Georgetown and we both got offers at the same company. Barely a year into our new roles, she announced she was getting married and moving back to DC. I attended her wedding in DC, which was the last time I remember talking to her. She just faded away. Funto and I were unsuccessful at finding her on Facebook and online.

I think about her frequently and occasionally check to see if anything comes up. Did she move back to Ethiopia with her husband? Did she stay in DC or move back to New York? I hope her marriage is ok. It was such a beautiful wedding but it all happened so quickly and I have always wondered.

I have the fondest memories of the JP Morgan Finance Analyst Class of 2007. It was the best of times, at least until it all came crashing down. The highlight was making so many great connections, maintaining them was another thing.

To the intern class of 2024 and the incoming analysts, here’s my advice.

This is the best time as any to make great connections. It requires less effort before marriage, kids, pets, big moves, and all the major life events yet to come. Make it the best of times.

To my friend, Shewit. Hey girl, I hope you’re good ❤️
