Don’t Forget to Look Up

It’s hard to believe but we are already two weeks into the new year.

In my Nigerian community, one phrase I have heard recently is "no gree for anybody" or  “No gree” which translates to “don’t agree” or “don’t ease up”

This term is a reminder to stay focused and to keep going in the face of opposition. One poster on instagram shared a rejection letter from a potential employer, to which he responded with his refusal to accept their rejection. The determination is commendable but I am not sure it worked.

I love the general idea that most people are hunkered down and working towards their 2024 goals. If you have chosen to focus on intentions instead of goals and resolutions, then you may be on to something.

If I could add anything to this, I would say whatever you do in 2024, don't forget to look up.

For me, this means making time to connect with people. It is a reminder that even on the most hectic days, I can look up for a few minutes and notice when my daughter is not as chatty as usual. Sometimes it means trying out things that might seem foreign and unnecessary. I have learned that just because something does not add to my life does not mean it cannot be enjoyable.

As you build your strategies and lay out your intentions, don’t forget to look up

Don’t forget to look up when things around you are shifting and people are pulling away.

Don’t forget to look up when the flower blooms. Don’t forget to look up and interact with people who might not bring much to the table or contribute to your bottom line.

Don’t forget to look up to see how far you’ve come. Don’t forget to look up to count your blessings.
